Higher Education Preparation Programme at Sheffield University

The Higher Education Preparation Programme helps students to develop a range of academic skills that will prepare them for HE level study.
Its aim is to support students to improve progression into and throughout degree level study.

The programme is aimed at post 16 students studying for a range of post-16 qualifications such as A-level, Diploma, BTEC and EPQ.
 
The programme includes:
  • Study skills workshops delivered at university.
  • Sessions covering reading, research, writing, exam revision, time management, critical thinking and other key academic skills
  • Full day visits to the university to introduce students to university level study
  • Working with current undergraduates and study skills workshops

Outreach Programmes at Sheffield University



ADOPT
A two year programme for AS level students wanting to enter any aspect of Dentistry.
Students who complete the two year programme will be guaranteed an interview for an appropriate course subject to meeting the minimum academic criteria.
During their two years they will see what it's like to work in dentistry, with the emphasis on hands-on activities and student interaction.
Student eligibility may include:
- Being the First generation of their immediate family to study at University.
- Few young people from the area where they live enter University.
- Personal circumstances make it more difficult for them to go to University.
SOAMS
For students looking to enter a career in Medicine.
Students who complete the scheme are guaranteed an interview for an offer to study Medicine at the University of Sheffield. However students must have completed all the SOAMS activities and have achieved four AS Levels at BBCC, including Chemistry and another science or Maths.
 If students pass their interview they will be made a conditional offer to study Medicine at Sheffield, providing they achieve the A Level results required by the Medical School.
Discover STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths)
An opportunity for students studying Maths and Science AS and A levels to find out more about the range of different Science, Maths and Engineering Degrees and Careers available.
Designed to support students whose family or personal circumstances mean they may not have considered a career in Science or Engineering as a possibility.
Discover Art and Humanities
A two year programme for AS level students. The aim is to encourage students from backgrounds that are under-represented in higher education to study at University. The University provides support and guidance through a range of exciting activities including subject taster sessions.
Subjects include:
Archaeology, English, History, Languages, Music, Philosophy/Religion, Theology, the Bible.
If you’re a creative thinker and interested in what makes us all tick, then Discover Arts and Humanities is definitely for you.
Discover Law
A two year programme of events offering students lots of opportunities to explore the study of law.  You get the chance to:
- Experience real life cases in one of the Sheffield Law Courts and talk to a Judge
- Meet working professionals and ask them how they got where they are
- Get expert guidance on applying to university
- Experience law taster sessions and team building activities
Discover Social Sciences
A programme that provides opportunities to study of lots of Social Science subjects, such as,  Politics, Geography and Sociology and get help and support with study skills and the UCAS application.
The programme is targeted at students whose family or personal circumstances indicate they are under-represented in Higher Education.

PATHWAYS TO LAW - SUTTON TRUST: DEADLINE 29 SEPTEMBER

Pathways to Law

 
The Pathways to Law programme was set up with support from major law firms, to inspire and support academically-able students in year 12 and 13 from non-privileged backgrounds interested in a career in law.

The Programme offers a varied programme of lectures, seminars, advice and guidance sessions, skills development workshops, also interaction with undergraduate students and professionals through e-mentoring and a legal work placement.

The Programme is targeted at:
17 and 18 year-olds in Years 12 and 13 whose parents have not been to university or who have been eligible for free school meals.

Pathways to Law is currently run through a network of universities across the UK including Manchester University, Nottingham Trent University and the University of Leeds, also with support from over 30 law firms.

The Pathways programme recruits 400 students a year across the country. Applications for our 2014 programme are now open!

  Students join the programme in Year 12, and must be able to participate for the full two years of their A levels. In order to be eligible for the programme, students must:

- Demonstrate an interest in a career in law
- Attend a state school or college
- Have at least 5 As or A*s at GCSE
- Be either the first generation in their family to attend university, or be or have been eligible for Free School Meals
- In schools with below average levels of attainment / progression to university
- In schools with high free school meal rate
- From deprived postcodes

Social Work Preparation Session - Notts Trent University


Social Work Application Talk

Students interested in studying a Social Work degree are invited to attend our application masterclass.

The event will include:

  • an introduction to social work and studying a Social Work degree at NTU
  • information and advice to help students complete a good UCAS application and prepare for interview
  • an insight into what Admissions tutors look for in potential Social Work undergraduates.
  • the opportunity to quiz students and staff studying and teaching on the course

This event will be an invaluable experience for for Year 13 students completing their UCAS applications and ideal preparation for Year 12 students planning their future.

Sheffield University, Researchers Night, Friday September 26th


On Friday 26th September, 5pm-8pm, the University of Sheffield's laboratories and lecture theatres will be open to the public for a host of activities. There'll be mini lectures, exciting demonstrations and hands-on activities
Find out about everything from butterfly evolution to dentistry, from archaeology to music.

If you've ever wanted to see inside a research lab, learn about the Sheffield dialect, watch research robots in action or tour the Alfred Denny Museum of Zoology then come along.

Higher Apprenticeships in Mechanical Engineering from October 2014

 



 AMRC Training Centre launches
  Higher Apprenticeships in Mechanical Engineering 
with accredited Foundation Degree





The AMRC Training Centre will commence delivery of higher apprenticeships in mechanical engineering from Autumn 2014.

Building on the success of the Advanced Apprenticeship programme, the Level 4 Higher Apprenticeship still combines on-the-job and off-the-job training, but will include a Foundation Degree which will be accredited by the University of Sheffield. This will offer a work based route into HI Tech Engineering professions which have traditionally been the preserve of graduates.
